Ali Jinnah announced in front of the students of the Race Course Maidan in Dhaka that "Urdu would be the only country language in Pakistan". Meanwhile, the students protested and slogans. In 1966, the construction of the Shaheed Minar was completed under the supervision of Professor Dr. Mahmud Hossain, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University. It was inaugurated on 21st February this year by language martyr "Barkat's mother".
On 17th November 1999, at the 30th session of UNESCO, 21st February was declared "International Mother Language Day".
Since 2000, Bangladesh has been playing together in 188 countries of the world as "Shahid Day", "International Mother Language Day".

"ভাষা আন্দোলন" বাংগালী জাতির জীবনেে এক অবিস্মরণীয় অধ্যায়।

১৯৪৮ সালে পাকিস্তানের গভর্নর মোঃ আলি জিন্নাহ রেসকোর্স ময়দানে উপস্থিত ছাত্র-জনতার সামনে ঘোষণা দেন যে " উর্দুই হবে পাকিস্তানের একমাত্র রাস্ট্র ভাষা" । এসময় উপস্থিত ছাত্রজনতা একথার প্রতিবাদ করে শ্লোগান দিতে থাকে। পরবর্তীতে এ প্রতিবাদী আন্দোলন অনেক দিন বন্ধ থাকলেও গোপনে গোপনে আরও শক্তিশালী হতে থাকে ভাষা আন্দোলনের এ কার্যক্রম । ছাত্রদের সাথে সময়, সুযোগ ও আন্দোলনের গুরুত্ব বুঝে যোগ দিতে থাকে অবিভাবক সহ সাধারন জনগণও । মাতৃভাষা বাংলাকে পুর্ব পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম ভাষার মর্যাদার দাবিতে, ছাত্রদের সহযোগিতায় এগিয়ে আসেন ভাষা প্রেমী বিপ্লবী জনতাও। বেগবান হতে থাকে ভাষ আন্দোলনের সকল ধরনের কার্যক্রম।
এরই ফলস্রুতিতে 1952 সালের(8ই ফাল্গুন 1358 বঙ্গাব্দ) এই দিনে , পাকিস্তানের শাসকদের রক্ত চক্ষু ও 144 ধারা উপেক্ষা করে ছাত্র জনতা মিলে কারফিউ ভঙ্গ করে রাজ পথে মিছিল নিয়ে নেমে পড়ে। +++
ছাত্র জনতার এই শান্তিপুর্ন মিছিলে পাকিস্তানি পুলিশ বাহিনী নির্বিচারে গুলি চালায় । সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই রাজপথে লুটিয়ে পড়ে মিছিলের একাংশ । পরে সেখান থেকেই রফিক, শফিক জব্বার ও বরকতের লাশসহ আরও কয়েক জনের লাশ উদ্ধার করা হয়। সেদিন রাজপথে আহত হয়ে ছিল আরও অনেক ছাত্র ও পথচারি। আহত অবস্থায় বেচে ছিলো আবদুস ছালাম । তাকে ঢাকা মেডিকেলে ভর্তি করা হলে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায়, দেড় মাষ পরে ৭ই এপ্রিল মৃত্যুবরন করেন।
পরে আরো অনেক ঘটনা ঘটিলেও ১৯৫৩ সালে ভাষা শহিদদের স্মরণে ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারী দিনটি "শহিদ দিবস" হিসেবে পালন শুরু হয়।
১৯৬৬ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপচার্য, অধ্যাপক ডাঃ মাহমুদ হোসেনের তত্বাবধানে সহিদ মিনার নির্মান কাজ শেষ হয় । এ বছরের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারীতে এটির উদ্বোধন করেন ভাষা শহিদ "বরকতের মা"।
১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ই নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কোর ৩০তম অধিবেশনে ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারীকে " আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস" হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়।
২০০০ সাল থেকে ,বাংলাদেশের "শহিদ দিবস", "আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস" হিসেবে বিশ্বের ১৮৮ টি দেশে একযোগে পালন হয়ে আসছে।
